We have an exciting employment opportunity for an Electrical/Mechanical Technician to join our team located in San Diego, CA. This position provides support to operation and maintenance of high-power radio frequency systems and power distribution systems for the DIII-D Tokamak experiment under the Magnetic Fusion Energy division.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs a variety of simple to moderate electronics and mechanical engineering tasks related to installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of complex equipment in the RF Systems such as EC, Helicon and LHCD.
  • Assist engineers, physicists, and other technicians in diagnosing and correcting operational problems or troubleshooting and testing equipment in support of scientific experiments focused on developing fusion power.
  • Hands-on experience with instrumentation and control systems, including loop checks, signal tracing, installation and setup of sensors and controllers, as well as calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Interprets basic information displayed to recognize when various operating measurements are drifting out of established parameters. Adjusts operating parameters to bring systems back to satisfactory operating conditions.
  • Under general supervision operates DIII-D equipment including high power electrical and water-cooling systems using computer-based controls.
  • Performs regular maintenance and calibration tasks.
  • Populates printed circuit boards and builds custom cables, including fiber optics.
  • Under supervision sets up and operates diagnostic equipment.
  • Uses hand and power tools to fabricate relatively simple items.
  • Trains in using equipment such as cranes, rigging, and forklifts.
  • Flexible in work schedules and task assignments. Some weekend and second shift work will occasionally be required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires an associate’s degree in the general area of electrical engineering, and five years related work and/or experience such as in the military, research, or manufacturing, with mechanical skills desirable. The applicant may substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education in any of these areas.
  • Ability and willingness to work on systems which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, high energy, cryogens, RF radiation.
  • The applicant must be familiar with principles such as resistive heating and voltage-current relationships.
  • Practical test instrumentation applications, such as oscilloscopes, DVMs and signal generators are desirable.
  • Experience with electrical circuit assembly and testing including schematics, wiring diagrams, basic circuit elements and programmable logic controllers (PLC) desirable.
  • Soldering skills and reliable cable assembly desirable.
  • Must have analytical ability to read and understand detailed instructions and drawings.
  • Experience with various machining techniques (lathe, mill, CNC, 3D printing, etc.) and vacuum systems desirable.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to safely, responsibly and reliably operate complex systems with training.
  • The position requires an energetic, multi-skilled, individual who is competent in both mechanical and electrical work, with enthusiasm and interest in learning new skills and performing a wide variety of tasks as required.
The successful candidate will be trained in required skills and in procedures and safety on the job and will be mentored by qualified personnel in performing any tasks with which the candidate is unfamiliar
