We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Electrical Technician to work on high power magnetic power systems within our Magnetic Fusion Technologies (MFE) group in support of the DIII-D program in San Diego, CA. Under limited supervision, this position will provide support for the operation of a 525 MW Motor-Generator plus high power ancillary equipment. An important part of this position is diagnosing the control systems for the Motor-Generator and supporting systems. This includes maintenance, repairs, upgrades plus operations and R & D support.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for operation and maintenance of 525 MW motor generator with complex layered control systems, which includes daily pre-operating inspection and generator startup, operation, and maintenance.
  • Sets up diagnostic equipment such as DVM’s, oscilloscopes, and function generators and obtains the needed results.
  • Responsible for observing all safety procedures and interlocks. Records documentation of systems and maintenance logs.
  • Performs maintenance on 480VAC power distribution and switchgear.
  • Performs installation, maintenance, and repairs on cooling water systems pump motors and VFDs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires associate’s degree or equivalent with three or more years of experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Flexibility in hours is required to cover late operation days and when emergency repairs.
  • Must have experience in AC power distribution.
  • Ability and willingness to work on systems, which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, or high energy is required.
  • Work in an industrial R&D lab environment requiring long periods of standing, walking, climbing, bending and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Experience using insulation testing equipment like Megger and Hi-pot testers to test motors, cables, and other electrical equipment for troubleshooting.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and repair of electrical, mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting relay control logic.
  • Familiarity with PLC’s or computer control systems is preferred.

Salary:$60,670 - $90,198
