We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Technician in our Energy and Advanced Concepts group in support of our Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) division for General Atomics. This position with modest supervision supports our scientific and engineering staff with a variety of engineering and operation activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supports engineering operations in the fabrication, assembly, modification, and installation of laboratory equipment and experimental apparatus.
  • Operates specialized laboratory or experimental equipment.
  • Supports the assembly and development of new product designs and processes requiring the ability to understand CAD drawings.
  • Identifies and reports operational problems or trouble sources in equipment or tests.
  • Sets up moderately complex experiments and/or tests; checks out and calibrates equipment prior to experimentation and data acquisition.
  • Records and reports experimental production test data, observing data for anomalies, preparing summaries of data via written tabulations, charts, graphs, and reports as necessary.
  • Prepares samples, operates equipment, and tabulates results for the characterization of mechanical, thermal, and other material properties.
  • Initiates and is responsible for procurement of standard materials, services, and parts required for tests, equipment, and provides necessary liaison in work area.
  • May assist in the design or feasibility of development, production, test, and experimental equipment.
  • Works in a lab environment requiring long periods of standing, walking, bending and lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • May work with toxic materials, chemicals, and gases, and must be able to perform duties with confidence while wearing personal protective equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires associate’s degree or equivalent with two or more years of experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Ability and willingness to work on systems which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, high energy, cryogens, or radioactive materials.
  • Knowledge of computer operations and applications pertinent to the field required. Must have analytical ability to read and understand detailed instructions, drawings and specifications. Communication skills necessary to write and record precise information.
  • Special skills and expertise to use complex equipment or experimental techniques.
  • Prefer hands-on experience operating standard machine shop tools, e.g., lathes, mills.
  • Desired experience with low and ultra-low vacuum systems.
  • Desired experience with robotics, vision systems, cleanroom protocols
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.

Salary:$52,020 - $77,325
