Job Summary General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) is a supplier of advanced electromagnetic systems, related power equipment and other high technology products for a variety of government and commercial applications. These include products such as the design and fabrication of linear motors, superconducting and conventional rotating motors, power inverters, high-energy capacitors, radiation monitoring systems, high-voltage direct current power distribution systems, and numerous other products.

This position is responsible for solving a wide range of advanced technical issues. The candidate will support the advancing technologies in radiation monitoring systems which provide for the safety of plant personnel and the general public. The candidate will evaluate, interpret and resolve complex engineering problems to meet the customer requirements, while maintaining compliance with nuclear regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Develops innovative but practical solutions to advance technical problems in Radiation Monitoring Systems Design.
  • Will mentor with senior team members to develop nuclear product engineering skills.
  • Participates in derivation, establishment, and recording of requirements to support design and test event traceability.
  • Supports change engineering activity by identifying and proposing changes to baseline documentation.
  • Generates plans and procedures for qualification testing, as well as factory acceptance testing, utilizing engineering and scientific principles.
  • Participates in the internal and external technical project/program reviews including preliminary and critical/detailed design reviews to ensure they meet defined product requirements.
  • Troubleshoots conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.
  • Addresses complex and difficult technical issues, drawing from advanced engineering concepts and/or highly creative approaches.
  • Create calibration procedures and reports. Work closely with radiation detector technician during the calibration process.
  • Provides focal point for technical communication within the company management and may represent the company as the prime technical contact to customers and/or government regulatory agencies.
  • Presents report(s) at engineering meetings, participate in program reviews and consults on problems.
  • Prepares and reviews documented design inputs for electrical and mechanical design, as well as calculations required to support design of radiation monitoring equipment.
  • Reviews requirement matrix and/or statement of work to generate basis of estimates in support of customer proposals.
  • May be asked to participate in design activity for other product areas.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the company.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, software/firmware engineering, or systems engineering backgrounds are preferred. Circuit board design would be a plus.
  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects.
  • A professional engineering license and original work published in professional engineering journals are desirable.
  • Demonstrated understanding of engineering processes and principles.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance in required
Additional experience preferred:
  • Knowledge of redesign for obsolescence, sustaining engineering, or nuclear engineering/regulatory requirements.
