Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Systems Engineering & Modeling Lead within our Advanced Programs group. Under limited supervision, this Systems Engineer will perform systems engineering and technical management of development projects, including final design, prototype fabrication and flight test of new GA-ASI, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). In addition, this System Engineer may support technical development of competitive proposals for existing and new DoD customers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supports operation of engineering systems and documents any problems.
  • Devises new approaches to resolve unusual or complex engineering problems.
  • Troubleshoot conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.
  • Understands digital models and can contribute to development of behavioral and/or functional capabilities at the component, subsystem, and system level.
  • Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required.
  • May represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects.
  • Provides direction to design or technical staff and will lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
  • Responsible for the execution and implementation of the engineering process: design, development, integration, test and performance verification.
  • Evaluates the integration of the engineering solution within the overall engineering environment; and ensures that appropriate documentation, testing, maintenance, and engineering updates are completed.
  • Develops and tailors entry/exit criteria for major design reviews
  • Develops an architecture modeling approach in conjunction with program leadership and GA-ASI functional engineering that meets customer needs
  • Implements modeling approaches that enable more extensive system level trade studies and analysis, while adding value at the subsystem/component level increasing design efficiency
  • Establishes typical systems engineering processes within Advanced Programs and tailors them for execution on multiple programs
  • Supervises a team of engineers responsible for execution of systems engineering and modeling on multiple programs
  • Provides engineering oversight and performs task management for engineers supporting multiple strategic thrusts within Advanced Programs
  • Supports requirements derivation and management, verification planning and completion, risk management and tracking and tailored architecture modeling approaches.
  • Develops and executes technology maturation plans for technologies key to platform development and enhancement projects
  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Supports program capture and business development activities including attendance of industry days, generating of white papers, proposal technical volumes and basis of estimates and BOMs for proposal cost volumes
  • Capable of integrating and testing mission systems of varying maturity levels onto advanced UAVs
  • Generation of airworthiness documentation and approvals, as required
  • Capable of understanding and meeting cyber security requirements including IATT, network security, interpreting classification guidance and DD254s, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; fifteen or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, thirteen or more years of experience with a masters degree, or ten or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones, with some experience in project leadership.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
  • Multi-tasking team player with a hands-on approach; customer-focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.
