Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting opportunity for a System Safety Engineer in our Safety and RAM Engineering group.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ability to learn aircraft and ground station subsystems and become an expert on how the systems interact and work as a whole.
  • Support safety analysis of our Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). The multiple programs in development support the US Army and US Air Force, along with many other US and Foreign customers.
  • In this role, the successful candidate will work on an integrated System Safety team to support customer risk acceptance and airworthiness certification activities.
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Development of a System Safety Program Plan, Preliminary Hazard Analysis, Functional Hazard Analysis, Common Cause Analysis, System Safety Analysis / Safety Assessment Report, and support of the Hazard Tracking System.
    • Perform Fault Tree Analyses (FTA) and Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA)
    • Writing clear and concise system safety requirements and support of relevant validation and verification activities.
    • Identifying and categorizing Safety-Significant (safety-critical and safety-related) functions and their effects within the hardware, software, and human interfaces of the design architecture.
    • Supporting the Design Review process and other related development review milestones (i.e., PDR, CDR, etc.).
    • Exercise engineering judgement in developing appropriate decisions considering decision criteria, implications, and possible consequences, to ensure system integrity.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Follow and apply basic engineering knowledge, adapt standard techniques, and utilize the required software tools and equipment, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Identify critical failure points within the system and ensure accurate reporting of safety and reliability risks using thorough attention to detail and good troubleshooting skills.
  • Communicate effectively verbally, and in writing in furtherance of interfacing with other professionals, producing appropriate documentation, and presenting to limited internal audiences.
  • Work both independently and within a team.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Security Clearance is required.
Excellent candidates will also have
  • Knowledge of aircraft design, systems engineering, model-based engineering, system integration, and/or requirements management.
  • Familiarity with military and/or commercial System Safety or Airworthiness standards and specifications such as: MIL-STD-882E, MIL-HBK-516C, Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) 4761 and 4754, STANAG 4671, 14 CFR Part 23/25, or AC 23/25.1309.
  • Familiarity with operation and processes of System Safety Working Groups and other related milestones such as PDR’s and CDR’s.
  • Familiarity with managing Hazardous materials as part of the System Safety process (including Hazardous Material Management Plan and Report); high level understanding of foreign Hazardous materials requirements (i.e., REACH) is desirable.
  • Pilot and/or aircraft hardware experience.
