Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Materials and Processes Engineering Supervisor to join our GA-ASI Mechanical Engineering team in Poway, CA. In this role, the candidate will provide supervisorial and individual contribution responsibilities within the metallic M&P Engineering group supporting design, manufacturing, and Quality organizations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Represent the organization as a technical expert in Materials and Processes Engineering, and as the direct supervisor of a small team of M&P engineers.
  • Supervise and direct the work of professional technical specialists. Oversee their output for consistency and accuracy.
  • Provide leadership and act as a mentor and advisor to team members. Align priorities to meet GA-ASI business objectives and Mechanical Engineering department goals.
  • Ensure technical competency and contractual compliance with government and industry standards including MIL-STD-1587, MIL-STD-1530, MIL-STD-1568, and AS21500. Lead development of applicable Design Manual sections, Standard Drawing Notes, Corrosion Prevention and Control Plans, Material and Finish Specifications, and metallurgical process specifications.
  • Provide technical expertise for reviews with subcontractors, special process facilities, and supplier assessments to ensure specification compliance and process integrity.
  • Develop technical presentations and comprehensive reports for senior management reviews.
  • Support new program budget projections, labor forecasts, and employee training requirements. Plan, track, and manage departmental budgets and weekly employee timekeeping.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in Materials Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; twelve or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, ten or more years of experience with a masters degree, or seven or more years with a PhD.
  • Demonstrates technical expertise in the application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice as well as project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.
  • Must have previous experience in Materials and Processes Engineering or similar role, and experience in technical leadership with an emphasis on design and production support.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Experience with common civilian and military aerospace materials and components (ferrous and non-ferrous metals, composites, fasteners, adhesives, sealants, etc.), manufacturing and/or special processes (heat treatment, welding, non-destructive inspection, chemical etching, machining, shot peening, etc.), and finishes (anodize, chemical film, passivation, paints, plating, etc.)
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise with materials characterization laboratory techniques.
  • Good understanding of airworthiness regulations as they pertain to Materials and Processes.
  • Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, and government representatives.
  • Must be customer focused, must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment, and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
