Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

In our GSE Production Mechanical Engineering Department, we have an exciting opportunity located in Poway, CA for a Ground Support Equipment Designer that wants to be part of making history by participating in the development of some of the most novel remotely piloted aircraft of our time.

Under general supervision, using computer-aided design (CAD), prepares complex engineering layouts, and/or detail drawings of minor components or portions of major systems. Work reflects individual creative use of known manufacturing and engineering principles and practices. Works from various forms of engineering input; makes mathematical calculations as required; determines proper layout of and prepares complete production detail drawings, assemblies, and installations; contributes design modifications to improve quality of product or facilitate manufacturing operations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Using standard and advanced CAD techniques and skills, works from engineering input including verbal or written instructions, sketches, or other specifications, prepares engineering layouts and/or detailed drawings of subsystems or subassemblies which reflect compatibility with other mating systems or equipment.
  • Create readable drawings suitable for fabrication or for use by others in making finished drawings.
  • Verifies own work, checking dimensions, materials used, quantities, performing mathematical calculations supported by handbooks and catalogs.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations such as tolerance stack up, interface compatibility, ease of assembly, and applicable system parameters using pertinent reference material.
  • Revise CAD or hand drawn board drawings as needed
  • Maintains records, files, drawing and parts lists, specifications, standards and other data essential to the completion of engineering drawings as required.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the company.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • May provide technical direction to drafting personnel.
  • May be asked to work as a junior level technician/assembler in a shop type atmosphere.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a high school diploma or a certificate from a recognized organization certifying completion of a training program utilizing technical engineering software applications and five or more years of experience in all aspects of drafting techniques and skills using 3D CAD solid modeling. May substitute additional education in lieu of work experience.
  • Must have good knowledge of dimensioning and tolerances, manufacturing processes and equipment, and other industry practices and standards.
  • Must be proficient in algebra, trigonometry, solid and analytic geometry, and properties of materials.
  • Must have good organizational skills and judgement in planning and performing tasks along with good communication and interpersonal skills required for interfacing and presenting results.
  • Must have good knowledge of computer operations and software relevant to design and drafting tasks.
  • The ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance is required.
