Job Summary General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

Position is located in the East San Francisco Bay area.

Under general supervision with limited review, this position is responsible for providing technical design solutions for a range of difficult design problems for structural products and components of products using computer-aided design (CAD) equipment and technical engineering software such as ProEngineer/Creo Parametric. This position is onsite at LLNL in Livermore, CA and some level of hybrid work may be approved.

Assignments are normally outlined in terms of objectives and anticipated results.
Work is reviewed in weekly meetings for adequacy in meeting objectives.
Responsible for documenting findings, communicating results to engineering staff and may make technical design presentations as required.
Typically has frequent intra-organizational contact and will have customer contact.
May provide direction to less experienced designers and support staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develops design solutions for assigned structural products and components.
  • Interacts with engineering staff on design concepts and progress.
  • May be assigned design responsibility for a major portion of a project or program.
  • Develops layouts, sketches, and drawings and may investigate design factors such as damage tolerance, durability, and structural modeling.
  • Details related structural assemblies, mechanisms, and devices.
  • Validates conformity to design standards and specifications and identifies design errors and other deficiencies and recommends changes.
  • Provides documentation, identifies design issues, and makes technical design presentations to engineering staff and customers as required.
  • Remains current in CAD techniques and any applicable state-of-the-art engineering design software applications.
  • May direct the activities of less experienced designers and support staff.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Additional Functions Other duties as assigned or required.
  • Provide advanced Computer Aided Design (CAD) support to engineering, scientific and technical staff
  • Capture design solutions using ProEngineer/Creo Parametric through updated model-based definition solutions
  • Maintain documentation in the Windchill/ELM (Enterprise Lifecycle Management) Configuration Management (CM) system
  • Apply appropriate standards to develop designs and create CAD objects, independently, under minimal supervision
  • Contribute to preliminary design concepts for hardware, componentry and systems including making independent judgment and decisions under moderate technical authority
  • Estimate scheduling and costs to determine effective methods in design, materials, and time to meet project deliverables and prepare and present technical material for design reviews, procedures, and other related documentation
  • Review completed drawings and other documentation for adherence to LLNL drafting standards and specifications
  • Collaborate within a team consisting of scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, coordinators, and procurement personnel to resolve moderately complex to complex design problems.
  • Interface with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory to complete various projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires an Associates degree or a certificate from a recognized organization indicating completion of training in ProEngineer/Creo Parametric or SolidWorks design software plus eight or more years of progressive experience utilizing CAD software with at least two of those years spent utilizing ProEngineer/Creo design software.
  • Additional education may be substituted in lieu of work experience.
  • Ability to interpret specifications and mechanical drawings including ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience working in an environment with stringent safety and security policies.
  • Must have a complete understanding of engineering design concepts and principles and possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly, applying them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Must be able to organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases.
  • Must also be able to determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Must have good communication, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, and excellent computer skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Desired experience with PTC Windchill Product Lifecycle Management software.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
