Job Summary
General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

Under close supervision and with specific, detailed instructions on routine tasks, the Mechanical Engineer supports the design, development, and documentation of structural and mechanical components for High Energy Laser (HEL) and Optical Communications Terminal systems.

This position focuses on applying fundamental engineering principles and computer-aided design (CAD) tools such as Solidwroks, CATIA, ProEngineer (Creo), or IDEAS to create mechanical models, drawings, and layouts in support of engineering projects.

Assignments are typically well-defined and are regularly reviewed for technical accuracy and adequacy in meeting project objectives. The engineer works collaboratively with more senior engineers and may interface with other disciplines including optical, thermal, and electrical engineering.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists in developing mechanical and structural design solutions for HEL and optical communication subsystems under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Creates and maintains 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and layouts in accordance with design and drafting standards.
  • Supports the integration and assembly of mechanical components, mechanisms, and opto-mechanical structures.
  • Investigates design factors such as thermal response, vibration, material selection, and manufacturability under direction.
  • Reviews designs for conformance to engineering requirements and specifications, identifying potential issues and proposing improvements.
  • Prepares technical documentation, including parts lists, design notes, and test support materials.
  • Participates in design reviews and team meetings, presenting findings and supporting trade studies as assigned.
  • Maintains current knowledge of CAD software tools and modeling techniques relevant to mechanical and opto-mechanical systems.
  • Follows all safety procedures, company policies, and engineering standards, contributing to a professional and compliant work environment.
  • Assists in prototype fabrication and testing support.
  • Helps maintain configuration control and engineering release documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Familiarity with CAD software such as Solidwroks, CATIA, Creo (Pro/E), or IDEAS.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment supporting optical and laser systems.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours to meet deadlines and increase probability of project success.
  • Must be customer focused and able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
