Job Summary General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies. We are hiring an Electrical Engineer to join our team in Rancho Bernardo. This position is responsible for supporting the Electrical Engineering sustainment team in resolving a wide range of advanced technical issues in Electrical Engineering. The candidate will evaluate, interpret and resolve systems engineering problems to meet the design requirements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Evaluate, interpret and resolve systems engineering problems to meet the design requirements.
  • Develops innovative but practical solutions to advance technical problems in engineering.
  • Address complex and difficult technical and manufacturing issues during the build of EMALS and AAG systems and sub-systems.
  • Create, re-draw and update drawings utilizing engineering change process and tools
  • Participates in the internal and external technical project/program reviews including preliminary and critical/detailed design reviews to ensure they meet defined product requirements.
  • Prepares and reviews documented design inputs for electrical design, as well as identify obsolescence required in support of the continuous operation of EMALS and AAG systems.
  • Troubleshoots conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.
  • Reviews requirement matrix and/or statement of work to generate basis of estimates in support of customer proposals
  • Generates plan and procedures for systems qualification testing, as well as factory acceptance testing, utilizing engineering and scientific principles.
  • Presents report(s) at engineering meetings, participate in program reviews and consults on problems

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Work directly with a Team Lead and associated Electrical Engineers on a given project.
  • Support electrical designs from conception, analysis, and manufacturing, through to operational test and deployment.
  • Provide design support and guidance in various aspects of Electronics System Development.
  • Be familiar with MIL-STD specifications for electronics component development.
  • Design and generate electrical component and lab instrumentation test system designs.
  • Develop detailed test verification procedures and acceptance test procedure.
  • Develop and test various digital/analog sensor emulation systems.
  • Perform electrical evaluation/selection of instrumentation and components to resolve system and design obsolescence issues.
  • Troubleshoot and repair existing systems and/or sub-system to determine the root cause of the issue and provide engineering recommendation.
  • Conduct analog and digital printed circuit board design for various application needs.
  • Develop test software modules to perform specific tests.
  • Work with eCAD designer to develop printed circuit board designs package.
  • Prior experience in electrical design change process including Engineering Change Notification (ECN) process and other configuration management tools.
  • Prior experience with circuit design of analog PCB, digital PCB, and power PCB.
  • Prior experience with electrical schematic entry, printed circuit board layout, parts selection and Bill on Material update.
  • ​Prior experience with FPGA circuitry design and coding in associated VHDL development environments (Xilinx FPGA using VIVADO tool).
  • Prior experience with controller circuitry design, controller sensors, Data acquisition system and associated embedded software development environments.​
Preference:
  • Hands on experience in the design, build, and test of embedded systems
  • Prior experience with circuit simulation tools such as Pspice, OrCAD, Multisim etc
  • Experience in the hardware design of embedded systems (microcontrollers, FPGAs, sensor interfaces, I2C/SPI buses, UARTS, etc.)
  • Prior experience with Generators, electronic load banks/power banks, high voltage power supplies, power analyzers
  • Prior experience with MIL-STD Specification, standards and processes.
  • Familiarity with data interface protocols and associated hardware such as Ethernet, RS232, RS422, RS485, Fiber Optics, etc.
  • Prior experience with design and testing cable harnesses, design and testing of analog instrumentation systems and design and testing of power supply.
  • Prior experience with test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logic analyzers, function generators, electronic load banks, power supplies, power analyzers
  • Prior experience in design and test of analog instrumentation systems
  • Project based experience designing, building, testing, and troubleshooting power distribution electronics, other electrical hardware (requirements definition, system modeling and simulation; circuit analysis; PCB design, fabrication, and assembly; harness design and fabrication; requirements verification)
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, logistics, quality assurance, configuration management and software engineers.
  • ​Proficient in MS Office programs, particularly MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, OneDrive and Outlook.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required
