Job Summary General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.
We are seeking a LabVIEW-focused Electrical Engineer to join our Embedded Systems team in Rancho Bernardo. In this role, you will develop LabVIEW-based solutions that generate stimuli, inject signals, and capture responses from complex system boxes to ensure correct functionality, support development efforts, and assist during system integration activities.
You will design modular LabVIEW code, integrate multiple I/O types, and build automation solutions that speed up system bring-up and troubleshooting. This role blends software development, hardware integration, and lab work to make sure systems operate as intended throughout development and integration phases.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop LabVIEW-based solutions that generate stimuli, inject signals, and capture responses from complex system boxes to verify correct functionality and support development efforts.
- Design modular LabVIEW code — using object-oriented techniques where appropriate — to sequence tests, manage complex I/O interactions, and log results in a maintainable, extensible way.
- Translate internal engineering needs into automation requirements and own the implementation from concept through deployment, ensuring solutions meet internal stakeholder objectives.
- Implement stimulus/response verification workflows across diverse I/O types, including analog, digital, CAN, RS-422, SPI, I²C, Ethernet, sensors, and actuators, to support system bring-up and troubleshooting.
- Support system integration activities, using automation tools and hands-on debugging to help ensure boxes function properly when integrated into larger assemblies.
- Debug issues by combining software analysis with hands-on hardware troubleshooting, using schematics, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab tools.
- Follow established software engineering best practices for LabVIEW development, including version control workflows, code reviews, documentation standards, and design patterns.
- Produce clear, concise technical documentation and reports to communicate results and findings to internal stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement of our internal automation tools and workflows.
We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Qualifications:
- Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine (9) or more years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, seven (7) or more years of experience with a master’s degree, or four (4) or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
- Strong expertise in LabVIEW, including object-oriented programming (OO-LVOOP) and scalable, modular code design.
- Proven experience developing automation solutions for systems with diverse I/O (analog, digital, CAN, RS-422, SPI, I²C, Ethernet, sensors, actuators).
- Solid understanding of test concepts, data acquisition, and system integration — able to design automation that is maintainable and extensible.
- Demonstrated ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-architected code using software engineering best practices: version control, code reviews, documentation, and modular design principles.
- Skilled at troubleshooting hardware/software interactions, reading schematics, and using lab tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
- Understanding of basic wire harnessing principles for signal and power distribution in low-voltage systems.
- Working knowledge of analog and digital circuits, including op-amps, filters, relays, digital I/O, and transceivers.
- Hands-on lab experience assembling, wiring, and validating systems.
- Strong communication skills, comfortable presenting technical solutions to engineers and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.
