Job Summary
General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

We are seeking a highly capable and experienced Systems Engineer V to lead and contribute to the design, integration, testing, and deployment of advanced systems for defense applications. This mid-to-senior level role demands deep cross-disciplinary knowledge across hardware, software, RF systems, mechanical design, and electrical subsystems, combined with a proven ability to work in complex, team-oriented environments.

The successful candidate will serve as a key technical leader within the engineering team, responsible for mentoring junior engineers, guiding integration efforts, and developing innovative solutions to complex field and system-level challenges. This role also supports field demonstrations, deployments, and customer engagements.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead or contribute to the design, integration, and verification of complex multi-domain defense systems across RF, electrical, mechanical, and software components.
  • Work collaboratively with diverse engineering teams to ensure system-level alignment and interoperability.
  • Support and sometimes lead field demonstrations, customer site deployments, and post-installation validation.
  • Translate customer requirements and operational needs into technical architectures, interface control documents, and system configurations.
  • Design and oversee cable harnesses, power distribution, and electronic subassemblies.
  • Provide hands-on support for RF systems, tactical radios, embedded electronics, and mechanical fixture/tooling solutions.
  • Review and generate engineering documentation, including block diagrams, system schematics, mechanical drawings, and BOMs.
  • Drive technical resolution of integration issues during lab builds and field tests.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing and process improvement efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable DoD standards, including environmental ruggedization, EMI/EMC, and cybersecurity guidelines.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required enabling an effective interface with other departments and/or professionals, and capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact, as well as providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
  • Customer focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
  • A Professional Engineering License, original work(s) published in professional engineering journals, and invited to present one or more original works to an engineering symposium are desirable.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Security Clearance is required.
