Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Project Engineer within our Advanced Programs group. Under limited supervision, this Project Engineer will lead efforts developing low maturity technologies into products that are ready for integration on GA-ASI unmanned aircraft platforms. In addition, this Project Engineer may support technical development of competitive proposals for existing and new DoD customers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supports operation of engineering systems and documents any problems.
- Possesses scientific background with deep technical understanding in one or more engineering areas, along with experience implementing designs in a lab environment to assess their performance
- Identifies critical technology areas of a particular product that will reduce the risks of the product achieving the desired level of performance
- Establishes a team of engineers and/or scientists to conduct modeling & simulation, basic design, prototype fabrication and laboratory style testing to address key model uncertainties and risks
- Contributes to 5-10 year roadmaps of unmanned aircraft capabilities. Identifies enabling technologies that will lead to the attributes required in future years, and develops maturation steps for those technologies.
- Develops and submits competitive proposals for DoD customers. Acts as the technical lead understanding customer requirements and developing our execution plan.
- Supports Internally funded development projects in their area of technical expertise.
- Devises new approaches to resolve unusual or complex engineering problems.
- Troubleshoot conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.
- Understands digital models and can contribute to development of behavioral and/or functional capabilities at the component, subsystem, and system level.
- Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required.
- May represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects.
- Provides direction to design or technical staff to accomplish one or more studies.
- Supports program capture and business development activities including attendance of industry days, generating of white papers, proposal technical volumes and basis of estimates and BOMs for proposal cost volumes
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
- Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
Job Qualifications:
- Typically requires a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree or PhD in Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive Engineering experience as follows; fifteen or more years of experience with a Bachelor's degree, thirteen or more years of experience with a Master's degree, or ten or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent Engineering experience in lieu of education
- Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones, with some experience in project leadership.
- Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
- Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
- Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects.
- Able to work extended hours as required.
- Multi-tasking team player with a hands-on approach; customer-focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required, existing clearance is highly desired.
