Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Industrial Engineer with Packaging Engineering qualifications within our ASI Division.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(Packaging Engineer)
- Responsible for designing, developing and testing packaging to ensure that they meet our standards and are cost effective.
- Collaborates extensively with cross functional teams including manufacturing, industrial engineering, global logistics and program management to develop packaging solutions, identify opportunities and resolve issues.
- Identifies and implements cost-saving measures in the packaging process
- Manages packaging supplier relationships including their service performance, package designs, cost and activity.
- Stays up to date with industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory requirements
- Maintains accurate records and documentation of the packaging design process.
- Responsible for responding to and closing any audit, workflow and process execution gaps and opportunities.
- Clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in written form to both technical and non-technical audiences, especially regarding package engineering processes, issues and proposed changes, quality issues and dispositions.
- Define, review, and approve packaging, preservation, handling, storage, and transportation policies and procedures.
- Determine packaging practices and materials for parts (production/COTS) based on shipment requirements with input from Engineering.
- Review any relevant documentation related to the handling of parts or packaging, including contracts, purchase and sales orders, and facilitate revisions to packaging information as needed.
- Create, review, and manage/revise packaging work instructions utilized by the shipping department and material handlers.
- Maintain accountability by collaborating with contracts, quality, engineering, manufacturing, and program teams to ensure best practices are followed.
- Audit (internal/external) packaging practices of the shipping team.
- Verify materials and packaging methods meet military packaging requirements (e.g., MIL-STD 2073), as applicable.
- Develop and distribute training on packaging standards, including military and industry standards.
- Assist in developing tools to support packaging design and container selection.
- Review and ensure labeling practices meet military standards (MIL-STD-129), as required.
- Identify special material properties and requirements such as HAZMAT, electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD), moisture sensitivity, fragility, oversized/overweight items, COMSEC, etc., and generate GA part numbers for MSDS Online.
- Review material and packaging costs and provide estimates for future shipments.
- Design special packaging using CAD for program deliverables to ensure proper transportability.
- Collaborate with programs to review and approve Supplier Design Reviews (SDRLs) and final program Contract Design Reviews (CDRLs) to ensure delivery on schedule to the customer.
- Train and interpret Military Standards in accordance with contracts and ensure compliance with packaging designs.
- Partner with cross-organizational teams (e.g., Engineering, Global Logistics) determine packaging and storage requirements across multiple locations.
- Conduct packaging testing and validation to ensure products are properly protected during shipping and handling.
Job Qualifications:
- Typically requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and two or more years of engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree.
- Experience with military packaging standards (e.g., MIL-STD 2073 and MIL-STD-129) is required.
- Experience with Engineering change processes, from requests through implementation is required.
- Knowledge of HAZMAT, ESD, and other specialized material requirements is desirable.
- Experience with drawings and engineering/manufacturing bill of materials is required.
- Experience with Lean/Six Sigma Manufacturing methodologies for waste reduction and their application in a manufacturing environment is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of ERP systems (SAP desirable).
- Basic CAD design experience (floor layout, small tooling, packaging, container preferred).
- Materials management (warehousing, transportation, logistics) experience desirable.
- Must have a general understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory with technical experience demonstrating the application of those concepts while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
- Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment and organize work assignments to meet established timetables.
- Must possess extensive project management skills.
- Good communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD secret clearance is required.
- Must be able to work extended hours as required.
