Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting career opportunity for a Electrical Engineer Supervisor-Electrical Engineering Systems Group working in our Unmanned Aircraft Systems group. With limited review, this position exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives for the review, research, design, development, and/or solution to advanced technical engineering problems. This position is responsible for leading a team of four to six engineers that develop the aircraft electrical subsystems of multiple MQ-9 aircraft development efforts. This leadership role also has responsibility for ensuring that all work performed by the team is 1) technically correct based on core electrical engineering principles and 2) that the electrical engineering effort (cost, schedule, and technical design) is executed in a manner allowing for program success. A successful candidate will be a technical engineer in the field of aircraft electrical system design who has strong project management and people leadership skills. This position carries significant responsibility for the successful execution of multiple programs. This position is responsible for leading a team of engineers who often act as the “face” of the Electrical Engineering department to program teams and customers for many efforts. As a leader within the Electrical Engineering Systems Group, the person who fills this role will leverage the talent of direct reports to accomplish the tasks at hand.

DUITES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise and direct the work of four to six Electrical Engineering Systems Group design engineers through complex engineering projects and tasks. Oversee their output for consistency and accuracy. Provide leadership and act as an advisor for determining engineering objectives. Guide project planning and associated project management efforts.
  • Develop innovative but practical solutions for advanced technical systems, including electrical power systems, vehicle management/flight control systems, payload subsystems, etc.
  • Oversee, and sometimes perform, the development and analysis of electrical system architectures, evaluation of electrical circuits and their operation at the system level, development of aircraft power budgets, analysis of equipment for compliance to GA-ASI requirements, etc.
  • Ensure the electrical subsystems, including their components, are designed, analyzed, tested and built to meet the program schedule.
  • Create and present reports and technical briefs that clearly communicate complex technical concepts during engineering meetings and program reviews with other GA-ASI personnel and external customers.
  • Represent the organization as a prime technical contact within the engineering team for assigned project(s)/program(s).
  • Coordinate with cross-functional design engineers from various technical disciplines (e.g. Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Flight Technologies, etc.) to solve relevant design issues.
  • Plan and schedule work assignments for the team. Monitor project schedules, budgets and deliverables using standard project management tools and related engineering systems.
  • Ensure the necessary design review processes are followed and the proper design control documentation is developed and maintained.
  • Monitor and communicate staffing needs to leadership for current and future efforts.
  • Lead the hiring process if the need for additional staffing is identified.
  • Actively manage the performance and career aspirations of all direct reports.
  • Lead the development of new, or expansion of existing, business opportunities.
  • Develop new analyses, processes, and documents that allow less experienced staff to approach similar problems more efficiently in the future.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Observe all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Familiarity with GA-ASI products (components and systems) is highly desired.
  • Must possess the ability to quickly build rapport and collaborate with many different disciplines and different types of people and teams, both internal and external to the organization.
  • Must possess the ability to actively manage the performance of direct reports.
  • Must have a complete understanding of electrical engineering concepts, such as power, grounding, analog/digital circuitry, data bus architectures, etc., experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts, and ability to expand knowledge of related concepts, theories, and practices.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine the appropriate approach at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Must be able to approach problems via core engineering principles and by examining, understanding, and thoroughly explaining complex technical concepts to engineers and other professional staff.
  • Must be able to develop new analyses, processes, and documents that allow less experienced staff to approach similar problems more efficiently in the future.
  • Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, the ability to perform complex tasks in one engineering area and lead a team of less experienced professional employees on complex and novel tasks.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Experience with FAA Regulations, NATO Standards, Military Specifications, and other aerospace industry standards is desired.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
