Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a CAD Designer to join our Electrical Engineering Flight Test team in Poway, CA.

This position supports the design and documentation of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation components used in flight test operations for GA-ASI products, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and project requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience with computer-aided design (CAD) tools, including Zuken, and a strong understanding of engineering documentation processes.

DUITES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and create CAD models and drawings of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation components in accordance with engineering specifications and standards, with a focus on flight test hardware and systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers and designers to develop accurate and complete technical documentation, including assembly drawings, part drawings, and bill of materials (BOM).
  • Utilize CAD software, including Zuken, SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD, or similar tools, to support the design and documentation of electrical and mechanical systems for flight test operations.
  • Ensure compliance with company and industry standards for drafting and design, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Revise and update existing CAD models and drawings to reflect design changes or modifications based on flight test requirements.
  • Organize and maintain engineering documentation within the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system (e.g., Windchill).
  • Perform quality checks to ensure accuracy and completeness of drawings and models before release.
  • Support the preparation of design review materials, presentations, and technical reports related to flight test systems.
  • Work closely with engineers, technicians, and flight test personnel to resolve drafting and documentation issues during test campaigns.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of drafting standards, templates, and best practices for flight test applications.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a high school diploma or a certificate from a recognized organization certifying completion of a training program utilizing technical engineering software applications and three or more years of work experience. May substitute additional education in lieu of work experience.
  • Proficiency in CAD software, including Zuken, SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD, or similar tools, is required.
  • Experience with PLM systems (e.g., Windchill) is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of drafting standards, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering documentation practices.
  • Ability to interpret and apply engineering drawings, specifications, and technical data.
  • Previous experience supporting flight test operations or aerospace testing is desirable.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, high-quality work.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with engineering teams and flight test personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines in a fast-paced testing environment.
  • Previous experience in aerospace, defense, or a related industry is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with unmanned aircraft systems or electro-mechanical components is a plus.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
