Job Summary General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an entry-level Metrology Engineer on-site within the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Target Fabrication Group in Livermore, CA.

Under close supervision with specific detailed instructions on routine tasks, the successful candidate will be a member of GA onsite team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, participating in the development, fabrication, characterization and analysis of novel experimental physics packages required for high energy density plasma physics experiments conducted at the world’s largest laser, NIF. There will be frequent collaboration with engineers, physicists, production, and target alignment subject matter experts to coordinate work and relay results. The ability to quickly adapt to emergent priorities throughout the workday is highly valued.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Interpret manufacturing drawings and specifications in order to create measurement plans for precision assemblies.
  • Perform detailed measurements and analysis of results using optical CMM techniques on fragile components and assemblies.
  • Support production activities and advise on OCMM technique in a timely manner to ensure smooth production flow.
  • Maintain safe, clean and organized assembly and characterization laboratories and equipment.
  • Assist with R&D projects under the direction of LLNL program leadership, and work with and provide support to the wider target fab team, collaborators and scientists.
  • Document findings, communicate results to scientific staff with confidence, and make internal technical presentations as required.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
  • Mandatory on-site work.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a basic understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow and apply basic engineering knowledge, adapt standard techniques, and utilize the required diagnostics, tools and equipment, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Must be able to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Good communication, computer, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other professionals, to produce appropriate documentation, and to present results to a limited internal audience.
  • Must be able to work both independently and on a team.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in data analysis is strongly desired. Fluent in Microsoft Office suite and experience with programming languages like MATLAB and Python is desired.
  • Emphasis on understanding engineering first principles in the context of assembly, metrology, and data analysis.
  • Must have ability to understand production and work with production system to communicate with stakeholders and disposition non-conformance reports.
  • Versed in inspection techniques such as optical microscopy, radiography, SEM/EDAX, white light interferometry, etc. is desired.
