Job Summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile and projectile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.
We have an exciting opportunity within our Aerospace High-G Components Department for an Engineering Manager to join our team in Fredericksburg, VA.

Candidates for this position will provide engineering leadership to a team of engineers focused on the development of specialized guidance electronics, telemetry, instrumentation and other electronics to support the development of smart artillery and other tube-launched projectiles or weapons that are designed to survive and operate in rugged, high shock and vibration environments. Desired candidates will have a solid engineering background and strong familiarity with embedded micro-processing electronics and embedded software design. Familiarity with rugged environment applications and hardening techniques is strongly desired. The position requires leadership to coordinate High-G product development and support activities for transition of prototypes into product manufacturing.

Other team leadership activities include managing one or more project development activities including planning, execution, progress tracking and reporting to achieve and maintain the quality objectives for the team. The position may require meetings with customers to brief project status and work to resolve technical or schedule issues. Leadership also involves customer interaction with occasional travel for technical interchanges and to brief project status. Team leadership includes establishing annual performance and individual development goals for the team members and conducting performance evaluations and recommendations for salary increases bonuses and promotions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct weekly meetings to review team project task assignments, assess task progress and allocate resources to new projects as needed with the goal of maintaining 100% utilization of team resources
  • Participate and provide skills in engineering processes including requirements analysis, design and test planning for guidance electronics, telemetry and data recorder technologies created and utilized in the High G group.
  • Support Project Manager (PM) with project tracking and status for projectile, missile or other design engineering tasks, and identify risk areas and potential mitigations
  • Support proposal teams with engineering design development WBS, task schedule and cost estimates to capture new work opportunities
  • Provides technical meeting documentation make presentations as required
  • Support development, review, and editing of technical documents as required
  • Contributes to the development of innovative engineering solutions for “smart” weapons such as guided projectiles or missiles to advance the use of GA products and technology to customer applications
  • Provides expertise to staff members working on challenging embedded electronics and software design
  • Anticipate and identify opportunities to expand the team to meet project needs
  • May assume technical and engineering responsibility for the success of an identifiable project.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Lead activities for engineering projects including planning and managing technical performance to ensure quality, business, and financial objectives are attained.
  • Participate in Quality Management System AS9100 internal and external audits for overall QMS knowledge and represent Design Engineering leadership in audits.
  • Lead progress review sessions to discuss cost, schedule, and technical performance.
  • Identify engineering issues and provide leadership in developing solutions such as re-allocation of resources or modifying contract specifications.
  • Responsible for ensuring all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations are observed wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Responsible for ensuring work is accomplished in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Participate in Security audits as required, and coordinate team audit participation as required
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
  • We operate on a 9x80 schedule with every other Friday off

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in engineering or a related technical field as well as eleven or more years of progressively complex engineering experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Must possess DOD Secret security clearance with ability to upgrade to Top Secret if needed.
  • Must be familiar with projectile and missile avionics subsystems.
  • Must be familiar with electronics hardening and test techniques to demonstrate survivability in high-G environments.
  • Must be familiar with, or have direct experience with testing avionics subsystems at private and US Government ranges.
  • Must have extensive technical expertise and application of embedded systems engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
  • Must have significant design experience with software development environments, tool chains and IDEs and revision control systems such as those based upon Git.
  • Skills in MS Office are required for presentation, document and data analysis; MS Project skills for initial WBS and project outline, linked tasks and local project tracking are desired.
  • Must have the capability to review systems requirements and apply resources to software requirements analysis and allocation to designs, testing strategies and verification/validation activities.
  • Must possess the ability to resolve management and technical problems.
  • Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to support effective interfaces with customers and team members.
  • Must be capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact, as well as providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
  • Must be customer focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.
  • Must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours to meet deadlines and increase probability of project success.
