Job Summary General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems. GA-EMS offers modular and scalable satellite platforms backed with a history of operational flight experience to support defense, civil, commercial, and academic mission requirements.
Our Space Systems team is looking for an experienced engineering team lead for our Space Systems Missions Operations Department as a Sr. Lead Mission Operations Engineer. In this role you’ll lead the Mission Operations team, ensuring effective satellite operations, planning, procedure development, and team performance to achieve mission objectives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise the Mission Operations department, overseeing day-to-day satellite operations, operations planning, and the development and execution of operational procedures.
- Provide hands-on leadership, mentorship, and direction to mission operations staff to ensure effective satellite monitoring, control, and anomaly resolution.
- Coordinate and manage resources to ensure the department is staffed with personnel possessing the appropriate skill mix to achieve operational objectives and meet cost and schedule requirements.
- Oversee the planning and scheduling of satellite operations and maintenance activities to ensure mission timelines and objectives are met efficiently and effectively.
- Develop, review, and approve operational procedures to ensure safe, reliable, and consistent satellite operations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical and scheduling issues and ensure alignment with overall program objectives.
- Collaborate with multi-discipline development teams to ensure development plans align with operational needs.
- Actively contribute to program execution by stepping in as a team lead or individual contributor, as needed, to address challenges and ensure operational success.
- Drive continuous improvement in mission operations processes and capabilities to enhance efficiency and reliability.
- Support the preparation, review, and approval of cost and resource estimates for proposals and Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) related to mission operations activities.
- Conduct performance evaluations, provide regular feedback, and implement development plans for direct reports to foster professional growth and alignment with organizational goals.
- Ensure all operations are conducted safely and in compliance with established procedures, company policies, and applicable laws and regulations.

Job Qualifications:
- Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
- At least 3 years prior experience in satellite operations.
- Familiar with Cloud-based and on-prem infrastructure, networking and cyber security.
- Demonstrates extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
- Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
- Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.
- Customer focused, must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment, and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
- Must have active TS clearance and be able to obtain and maintain TS/SCI security clearance.
