Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

This supervisor position is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic special project prototyping environment on complex projects involving composites, fab/machining, paint, assembly, and application of specialty low observable features and coatings. Projects are quite varied and could be fully integrated into small aircraft demonstrators, mission capable payloads and pods, RCS test bodies, and more. Ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual with a hands-on background and skills in multiple disciplines with the ability to exercise creative thinking and problem solving to work through challenges. Projects can be short or long lived many times with quick reaction schedules and may require work in remote or classified spaces with alternate working hours.

Role will be supervising technical staff contributing to prototyping and quick reaction special projects. This will include oversight of manufacturing on the shop floor and support of various aspects of projects including planning and estimating, coordination of new projects, materials procurement, investigation/troubleshooting of issues, and other activities. Can include design work for components, fixtures, or tooling along with some rough sizing and analysis work as needed. Will also coordinate with other engineering groups and provide early input on design for manufacturing during the development cycle. Tasks involve the exercise of independent judgment and discretion about matters of significance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervises core team of skilled technical staff on manufacturing prototype and quick reaction projects.
  • Coordinates work activities by resolving priority schedule conflicts.
  • Interacts with internal and external engineering and project/program staff at various levels concerning resolution of technical/requirements issues.
  • Works directly with engineers to enhance manufacturability, assembly, and integration of components and subassemblies starting at initial model/drawing creation and continuing throughout the manufacturing phase.
  • Applies technical knowledge and devises new approaches to analyze, investigate and resolve complex engineering, manufacturing, assembly and repair problems.
  • Define shop requirements and assist with development of tooling, fixtures, and processes to support manufacturing activities.
  • Work directly with machinists, laminators, programmers, and other technical staff to solve manufacturing issues and meet delivery goals.
  • Supports periodic program engineering/manufacturing planning meetings.
  • Reads, interprets, and analyzes engineering source material such as engineering drawings, test plans, design specifications/documents, and interacts with technical experts.
  • Develops manufacturing plans with supporting work instructions/documentation and supports transition to low-rate initial production for new programs as needed.
  • Responsible for shop standards, company process compliance, staff training, and safety.
  • Recommends and guides facility maintenance items and capital improvements.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects.
  • Able to work extended hours as required. A Professional Engineering License and original work published in professional engineering journals are desirable.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Security Clearance is required.

Salary:$98,100 - $171,398
