The DIII-D National Fusion Facility in Torrey Pines, CA is the U.S.’s principal magnetically confined fusion research facility, focusing on the exciting science of the burning plasma state and its control in preparation for ITER, and developing the path to self-driven fully non-inductive operation for future fusion reactors. It has a strong focus on underlying science, and the application of this to improve fusion performance.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced Scientist to join the DIII-D Dynamics and Control Program to lead and conduct research on the establishment of high performance scenarios for ITER and future fusion reactors, and develop the means for their robust control.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead ITER Inductive Physics Area to develop a robustly controlled stable ITER baseline scenario, with required techniques implemented and physics understanding to project solutions to ITER.
- Oversight of research team and direct engagement on: formulation of experimental strategy, development of collaborators, engagement and role allocation of research personnel, formulation of proposals and experiment plans, review, execution of experiments, associated physics analysis and deliverables (papers talks). Provide advice on facility development where appropriate, especially for above goals.
- Engagement at international level to lever DIII-D research and accelerate worldwide progress toward fusion scenario solutions. This will involve collaborative studies on other facilities and as well as leading role in world-wide physics discussions and planning (eg. ITPA, conferences, meetings).
- Engage strongly in associated control research to develop the tools needs for robust operating scenarios.
- Conduct innovative control development and stability management is expected. Direct implementation of advanced control approaches is expected on DIII-D toward the above scenario goals.
- Engagement in related projects on other facilities is likely, including collaborative work on GA contract for EAST, JET or MAST-U.
- A strong, possibly leadership role in provision of ‘physics operation’ of DIII-D is foreseen, to ensure experimental campaigns are well supported.
- Position will involve supervision of a research team. It may also include (or likely develop to) direct supervision (‘line management’) of other scientist.
- Participation in experimental operation of DIII-D and other tokamaks worldwide.
- Publish in recognized scientific journals, present work at national level, pursue research projects, and work with and provide support to the wider DIII-D team in the above topic areas.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
- Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in a scientific or related technical field and progressively complex scientific experience as follows; fifteen or more years experience with a Bachelors degree, thirteen or more years experience with a Masters degree, and ten or more with a PhD. Equivalent scientific experience may be substituted in lieu of education. Must have extensive experience in tokamak operation, scenario development and control, and in depth understanding of fusion reactor needs, especially ITER.
- The successful applicant is expected to be an accomplished scientist, with significant publication record, achievements, and international profile.
- Must have; (1) a thorough understanding of relevant scientific concepts, principles, and theory, particularly with regard to general tokamak plasma behavior; (2) experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, (3) experience working with tokamaks including control approaches to achieve physics goals; (4) rigorous understanding and demonstrated experience in tokamak MHD equilibrium and stability physics.
- Must possess the ability to; (1) understand new concepts quickly; (2) apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; (3) organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, (4) determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
- Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one scientific area; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.
- Facility in moving rapidly from one task area to another, and ability to work extended hours and travel as required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the scientific and engineering communities of DIII-D and collaborators, including written and oral technical presentations.
- Willingness to adjust working hours in accordance with the schedules and needs of the Fusion Division is desirable.
