Job Summary General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) is a supplier of advanced electromagnetic systems, related power equipment and other high technology products for a variety of government and commercial applications. These include products such as the design and fabrication of linear motors, superconducting and conventional rotating motors, power inverters, high-energy capacitors, radiation monitoring systems, high-voltage direct current power distribution systems, and numerous other products.

We have an exciting opportunity in our Aerospace Systems Engineering directorate for a full-time Senior Model Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) to support a variety of aerospace development programs and products. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise to multi-disciplinary teams that may be geographically distributed between Huntsville, AL, Centennial, CO, Fredericksburg, VA, and/or San Diego, CA. This position is located in Huntsville, AL.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide expert systems engineering expertise for a multi-disciplinary team delivering MBSE support for cutting edge missile, projectile, spacecraft and hypersonic vehicle development projects
  • Collaborate daily with GA and customer engineering and program management teams
  • Lead translation of government and industry stakeholder needs into Model Based Systems Engineering Model including artifacts such as the hardware and software architecture, use cases, states and modes, requirements, sequence diagrams, etc.
  • Lead functional decomposition from the system level down to the component level and document requirements, functionality, and interfaces across all system elements
  • Collaborate closely with other Systems Engineering disciplines (aerodynamics, propulsion, lethality, guidance, navigation, control), Design Engineering (mechanical, electrical, flight software) and Assembly, Integration and Test (AI&T) teams to mature the systems model and associated artifacts
  • Lead working groups to refine and conduct peer reviews of system models
  • Lead and support the planning, development and execution of major program technical reviews including System Requirements Reviews, Preliminary Design Reviews, and Critical Design Reviews with a focus on incorporating the MBSE model and associated artifacts as the focus of the design reviews
  • Support risk and opportunity management, technical performance metric monitoring, requirement verification, and other core systems engineering activities, as needed
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills with and between customers, team members, task leads, functional managers, and program management to facilitate rapid resolution of technical and program issues
  • Serve as the lead systems engineer on one or more development projects
  • Make technical presentations during working groups and peer reviews, or to senior management or customers, as required
  • Support development, review, editing, and production of system models, technical documents, digital products, and proposals as required
  • Mentor less experienced systems engineers in MBSE best practices; socialize and ingrain MBSE into the local engineering team culture and project execution
  • Perform other duties as required

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows: six or more years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree; four or more years with a Master’s degree; two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a thorough and broad understanding of engineering concepts and principles, and the ability to apply those concepts to development of cutting edge aerospace systems
  • Strong experience with MBSE methods and industry application of those methods, is required.
  • Strong experience with the Cameo/MagicDraw suite of tools is required; The ability and desire to teach and mentor other Systems Engineers in their use is also required.
  • Understanding of missile, spacecraft, and/or projectile subsystems and the engineering disciplines that support them is required.
  • Experience developing inputs to proposals, white papers, and requests for information (RFIs) is highly desirable
  • Experience using classical requirements management tools (DOORS, Jama, CORE etc.) is highly desirable
  • OMG-Certified Systems Modeling Language (SysML) Professional (OCSMP) certifications (SysML Model User, SysML Model Builder Fundamental, SysML Model Builder Intermediate, SysML Model Builder Advanced) are highly desirable
  • INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) is desirable
